At Bromley High School, we believe that academic excellence is about more than achieving outstanding results. It is about being curious, asking questions, making connections and having the confidence to explore ideas beyond the boundaries of the curriculum.
Our Scholarship Programme exists to give our pupils the opportunity to do exactly that. It provides a stimulating environment in which pupils can explore challenging ideas, discover new interests and develop the habits of mind that characterise genuine scholarship.
Through discussion, debate, wider reading, independent enquiry, lectures, competitions and experiences beyond the classroom, scholars are encouraged to think deeply, question thoughtfully and pursue their own intellectual interests.
What does it mean to be a scholar?
Being a scholar is not simply about being academically successful. It is about having the curiosity to ask why, the independence to pursue an idea further and the openness to consider different perspectives.
Our scholars are encouraged to look beyond what they already know and to engage with ideas that may have no obvious answer. They explore connections between subjects, encounter perspectives beyond their usual areas of study and develop the confidence to form, articulate and challenge ideas.
A programme that develops with every pupil
The Scholarship Programme is tailored to the age, interests and developing independence of our pupils, providing a clear academic journey from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form.
In Years 7–11, each year group follows its own programme, with bi-weekly scholarship meetings organised by the Head of Academic Scholarship. These sessions provide regular opportunities for scholars to step beyond the taught curriculum and engage with ideas in new and challenging ways.
Sessions include critical-thinking modules, guest presentations from Bromley High School staff and external speakers, discussion and debate. They are designed to encourage pupils to question assumptions, make connections and consider perspectives beyond their usual areas of study.
As pupils progress through the School, they are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their scholarship, pursuing areas of personal interest and developing the confidence to contribute their own ideas.
In the Sixth Form, the Scholarship Programme builds on this foundation through a similar range of talks, meetings and activities designed to broaden and challenge pupils thinking. Sixth Form scholars are encouraged to become active participants in the academic life of the School, including mentoring younger pupils, leading subject clubs and societies, and demonstrating scholarly attributes through their own engagement and leadership.
Scholarship Programme Details
The Scholarship Programme sits alongside the rich academic opportunities available within the classroom and across the School. It provides an additional layer of academic enrichment, allowing pupils to explore subjects in greater depth and to encounter ideas that extend beyond the requirements of their courses.
Scholars may engage with:
- Wider reading and university-level resources
- Lectures, seminars and masterclasses
- Academic competitions and challenges
- Critical thinking and philosophical enquiry
- Discussion, debate and public speaking
- Independent research and projects
- Visits, trips and opportunities to learn beyond the classroom
- Academic clubs and societies
- Talks and presentations from staff, pupils and external experts
- Opportunities to share their own interests and expertise with others
The programme is deliberately broad. A scholar might find themselves exploring a philosophical question one week, examining an idea that connects science and history the next, or following an entirely new area of interest sparked by a lecture or discussion.
The Minerva Lecture Series
A key part of the Scholarship Programme at Bromley High School is the Minerva Lecture Series, which brings the intellectual life of the wider world into the School.
The series provides all pupils with opportunities to encounter challenging ideas, hear from inspiring speakers and explore subjects beyond the boundaries of their usual curriculum. Lectures are designed to stimulate curiosity and conversation, encouraging pupils to think critically and to consider questions from different perspectives.
The Minerva Lecture Series reflects the philosophy at the heart of our Scholarship Programme: that some of the most valuable learning happens when pupils are introduced to an idea they have never encountered before and are given the opportunity to ask, “What if?”
