Physics Trip to CERN

The Physics trip to Geneva gave the Sixth Form Physics students a fantastic opportunity to see many amazing sites, such as the UN building, the Red Cross Museum and CERN. On their visit to CERN the girls were lucky to receive a presentation from a lead engineer which is not available to most visiting school groups, who spoke to the girls about his career progression at CERN. He also discussed their plans to build another, larger collider. Next they visited the Universe of Particles and Microcosm exhibitions, where the girls heard a detailed account of how different components of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) function, for example, how electric and magnetic fields are used to direct and accelerate charged particles. In the afternoon the 6th Form group crossed over the border from Switzerland into France and went underground to see a collider which again is not available to many visiting schools.
