Last week, Year 6 pupils delved into the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a captivating workshop. Beginning with the evolution of computing power, they learned how AI tackles complex tasks beyond traditional rules-based algorithms. Using a Raspberry Pi and camera, they explored Machine Learning (ML), teaching computers to discern between various images.
As aspiring AI engineers, they navigated challenges like background interference and understanding AI limitations. From autonomous vehicles and medical science to video creation, they explored AI’s practical applications in daily life and its potential impact on future careers.
The workshop sparked debate on AI’s creativity versus human ingenuity, emphasising the unique strengths of both. Through hands-on activities and discussions, pupils gained insight into AI’s capabilities and its dynamic relationship with humanity.
Livia commented: “I found the workshop really interesting because it was interactive and I learnt that AI needs lots of data to make it as accurate as possible.”
Scarlett added: “I would like to create my own AI chatbot in the future to help with solving homework problems…not giving the answer, but helping to better understand the problem.”
Mrs Shallcross, Head of Computing at Bromley High Junior School, shared:
“The AI workshop for Year 6 is a valuable part of the learning journey into understanding the potential and risks of AI, while in a safe environment. The girls approached the topic with maturity and sensitivity in understanding bias and the effect on society.
“As the technology evolves at an ever-increasing rate, it is becoming more and more difficult to discern fact from fiction. It is this critical thinking and evaluation that is becoming ever more important, and the workshop provided the opportunity to explore this in a fun and interesting way.”
