Earlier this term our Steinway Scholarship mentees were lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit the Steinway Piano Workshop in London.
As part of the Steinway Mentorship Programme they were able to have a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the workshop and a specialist talk by one of the senior technicians where they learnt about how the pianos are made, how they are tuned and prepared for the London concert halls, and some of the secrets of the trade in terms of individualised preparation for celebrated concert pianists such as Yuja Wang and Vladimir Ashkenazy.
They also attended the live BBC Lunchtime concert at Wigmore Hall, an inspirational solo piano recital by Elizabeth Brauss, one of the BBC’s New Generation Artists who made her Proms debut last year. She performed a wonderful range of repertoire from Scarlatti to Ravel.
