A group of Year 7 and 13 pupils have donated forty beautiful gift boxes to The Baytree Centre, a social inclusion charity for women and girls in Brixton.
In September this year, Lara in Year 13 started a project to support girls who have had to leave their home countries and who are trying to build new lives in the UK. Lara’s idea was to create gift boxes containing essential self-care items and small luxuries, helping to share care and tenderness in difficult times. Throughout the term, with lots of artistic and creative help from fellow Year 13 pupil Giselle, Lara has encouraged girls to donate a wonderful selection of lovely self-care items.
From its small self-care beginnings, the project grew into something much bigger through the amazing energy and enthusiasm of Year 7 English pupils, teachers and form tutors. They were inspired to support the project through reading ‘In the Sea There Are Crocodiles’, a book about a young boy’s difficult journey from Afghanistan to Italy. Together they donated a brilliant collection of gifts, making the self-care gift boxes even more special.
Lara, Giselle and a brilliant team of Year 7 girls packed forty beautiful gift boxes and bags, containing items such as letters, chocolates and self-care products. The girls gave them to Rosanna and Madiha from the Baytree Centre, at a gift-giving celebration beside the school Christmas tree in the main foyer. Rosanna and Madiha talked to the girls about the Baytree Centre and about the women and girls they support.
