Our Sixth Form pupils had the exciting opportunity to hear from travel journalist Simon Parker, who shared his experience in the undiscovered world at the latest Minerva Lecture.

Having previously worked for the BBC, The Telegraph, and many other broadcasting services, Simon’s main focus of the lecture was on the Arctic and how climate change is modernising the Arctic world and ways of life. He is extremely passionate about environmental changes in the Arctic and their impact on local ecosystems, effecting species such as the king crab, snow crab and Northern Brown bee.

Simon talked also about his visit to Svalbard which experiences polar nights, when the sun is at least 6 degrees below the horizon, which can be the case from mid November to late January. He explained this as a very confusing concept as with continual darkness, without a watch to keep time, you wouldn’t have known what part of the day it was.

“It was really interesting listening to someone talk so passionately about a part of the world many of us know so little about.”Amelia, Year 12 pupil
