In November, Year 12 and Year 12 mathematicians had the opportunity to attend the inspiring Maths in Action conference at the Emmanuel Centre in London. Both groups explored a wide range of lectures that highlighted the creativity and practical applications of mathematics beyond the classroom.

Year 12 pupils enjoyed topics ranging from the surprising geometry behind knitting in circles, the intricate patterns of fractals, to the probability and strategy behind Pokémon. One of the standout moments was hearing from Dr Jamie Frost, a maths educator and founder of the widely used online platform DrFrostMaths, whose resources have supported millions of students. Later, they were captivated by Professor Nira Chamberlain OBE, a leading British mathematician, who confidently argued that mathematics is unequivocally the most interesting subject of all.

The following week, Year 10 students explored lectures on magic tricks, chess, juggling, the predictability of randomness, and even unconventional uses of a chessboard. A particular highlight was discovering the mathematical patterns behind juggling tricks and how to create new ones. Dr Frost also delivered a practical session on revision and exam techniques, providing invaluable tips for future assessments.

Both trips left students inspired, curious, and excited by the many fascinating directions mathematics can take in real life.

“This trip was extremely intellectually stimulating and enjoyable, and everyone had a great time.”Imogen, Year 12 pupil
