Year 6 pupils delved into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) during a captivating workshop. Beginning with the evolution of computing power, they explored how AI can tackle complex tasks that go beyond traditional rules-based algorithms.

Using a Raspberry Pi and camera, they engaged with Machine Learning (ML), teaching computers to recognise different images. As budding AI engineers, pupils tackled challenges such as background interference and explored the limitations of AI. They also investigated real-world applications – from Netflix recommendations to autonomous vehicles – and considered how AI could shape future careers.

“The activities help us think more about AI and how it works.”Ruby, Year 6 pupil

The session sparked lively debates about AI’s creativity versus human ingenuity, highlighting the unique strengths of both. Through hands-on activities and discussion, pupils gained a deeper understanding of AI’s capabilities and its evolving relationship with humanity.

Naturally, the group had to round off the workshop by feeding the session notes into an AI to generate this article! We were impressed with the results… but here are a few quotes from real humans:

“The workshop was extremely fascinating and it was fun to use the technology. It has taught me to think more critically about AI.”Katy, Year 6 pupil

“I would love to be an AI engineer in the future… it really caught my attention!”Kirsten, Year 6 pupil
