Four Year 10 pupils had the exciting experience of taking part in the prestigious LSE Schools Debating Competition, their first external debating competition.
The competition, held on-site at the London School of Economics, is one of the largest British Parliamentary debate tournaments for secondary school students in the country. This year due to COVID, all communication was split across Zoom and Discord, where pupils received the motions, did the debate and received their feedback online.
The team’s favourite motion of the day was ‘This house as a young actress, would purposefully share details of their personal life to the media and public’. They opposed this motion and came second with some carefully thought-out points.
Year 10 pupil Lydie said “At first, it was quite daunting to have to debate in front of people that you didn’t know and couldn’t see, but having a partner there with you – well, on the other end of a facetime- was very comforting and we soon got into the swing of things, especially after the lunch break, by which point we had obtained some valuable feedback and were ready to conquer the afternoon.
This was a really great event that helped with developing our skills and gaining experience. I would love to take part in it again.”
