Three Year 10 students studying GCSE German entered the prestigious Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators competition this year.
Hannah, Abby, and Zadie completed all work individually and in their own time, each producing fantastic translations of a passage from the novel Wie der Wahnsinn mir die Welt erklärte, a book for young adults by Dita Zipfel.
The Anthea Bell Prize, organised by The Queen’s College, Oxford, is inspired by the life and work of the renowned translator Anthea Bell. It aims to promote language learning and creativity, challenging students to apply a range of techniques to overcome obstacles in translation, such as cultural references or colloquial language. Over 22,000 students from across the UK took part in the competition, with entries judged by professional literary translators and German students from the University of Oxford.
Congratulations to all three students for their efforts, and particular congratulations to Zadie, who was awarded a Commendation for her translation. The judges noted that it showed an impressive balance of accuracy and creativity.
