Year 10 pupils took an exciting trip to the Dominion Theatre to watch GCSE Poetry Live, seeing live performances from a great selection of the poets they are studying.

On the agenda were five highly respected poets including former and present Poet Laureates of the United Kingdom – Carol Ann Duffy and Simon Armitage. Along with John Agard, those three poets are included in the pupils’ Power and Conflict themed GCSE poetry, so to gain their personal perspective and further contextual knowledge for their annotations and notes was very insightful.

Pupil India said “As a Year 10 myself, when I spoke with my classmates it was clearly voiced that John Agard’s theatrical and exuberant performance of the GCSE poem ‘Checking Out Me History’ was popular across the year and entranced and mesmerised the whole theatre.”

“Furthermore, the talk involved Examiners’ Sessions, allowing us to explore the proper techniques for answering some GCSE questions which all my friends agreed was very beneficial too. Overall, seeing the poets live was incredibly intuitive and an amazing experience in which we gained new ideas, admiration and motivation. It was definitely a trip we will all remember!”
