This week, Smallpeice Trust visited the Design and Technology department to enrich the STEM learning for our Year 10 pupils.
The full day project was to design and build a new generation loudspeaker to use with a mobile phone or tablet. The design of the casing was an essential component which had an impact on the final sound, the design had to consider function and aesthetics.
In addition to learning about electronics and soldering a circuit board, the groups had the challenge to create a marketing strategy to convince potential investors to back their designs. A video advert was filmed and edited on iPads, a pitch was created and cost factors of the design were considered.
Year 10 also learnt about summer courses on offer through the Smallpeice Trust and how to find out more information regarding Arkwright Scholarships.
‘It was an insightful day and provided a real look into design and engineering careers.’Mrs Bence, Head of Design Technology
