Upper Sixth Latin pupils visited King’s College London to see a production of Virgil’s Aeneid, complementing their recent studies.
After a lovely dinner at Pizza Express, the group headed to King’s College London. The production was a great chance to improve the pupils’ knowledge of the Aeneid; a story about a Trojan aristocrat trying to find a new homeland for his people who escaped the fall of Troy and fighting to the death with Turnus, an Italian aristocrat, over who gets to marry Lavinia, the local princess in Italy.
The pupils liked the element of it being read in Latin because with the help of the translation in the programmes, they were able to recognise the vocabulary from their lessons (mostly at least!) and the performance aspect made the text more engaging.
The playing of the double pipes also added great atmosphere to more poignant parts of the story, and the English sections provided much needed context and humour to the piece as a whole.
“The thing we really enjoyed about the trip was being able to see our classwork outside of the lesson and being able to see how it fitted in with the entire story was really interesting. Beth, Aimee & Anjana, Sixth Form Latin students
