Last week, eight pupils from Year 10 to Sixth Form took part in the Oxford Schools’ Debating Competition.

Run by the Oxford Union, Oxford Schools’ is the largest British Parliamentary school-level debate competition in the world, and the largest debating competition in the UK for students aged 14 to 18.

Bromley High entered four teams including pupils Hannah, Olivia, Amelie, Darcey, Eleanor, Aria, Lydie and Ramya. Joined by numerous other schools, our debaters had a chance to interact and virtually meet some new people involved in the competition.

There were two motions in this competition, the first was ‘This house would give two votes to citizens aged 18-35 in all elections’ the second being ‘This house supports a world where, after COVID-19 is no longer a threat to public health and safety, working from home remains the norm.’ Overall, it was a great event and two pupils were able to qualify for the next round of the competition with seven other successful teams. Congratulations to Darcey and Amelie!

“My partner and I thought the motions were very interesting and enjoyed listening to what everyone had to say throughout each debate. It was a fun yet challenging experience.”Lydie, Year 10 debater

Darcey (Year 11) and Amelie (Lower Sixth), qualified for the next round
