Earlier this term, Business & Economics Sixth Formers gathered in the library to listen to three speakers who each shared their experience in their chosen careers.
The first speaker, Amy Borrett, is a data researcher for Sky News, working on a range of national and international stories. She finds and develops stories hidden in data, and communicates them using a range of visual storytelling techniques. Amy gave the students an insight into how news articles use statistical data in their reports and the relevance of economic data in our daily lives.
Julian Andrews, a successful business entrepreneur, inspired students with his thought provoking insights into the characteristics and skills needed to drive a company forward in today’s fiercely dynamic technology market. With over two decades experience in the telecommunications industry, and a career encompassing the Corporate and SME market, Julian Andrews co-founded Virocom in 2004 and had a vision of building a business that was not only about profits and growth, but about people and enhancing their working lives.
The third talk was delivered by Elaine Drayton, a research economist who joined the Institute of Fiscal Studies in 2020 and works in the education and skills sector. Her research interests include understanding the origins of socioeconomic inequalities and the role that policies play during early years up until adulthood. Elaine’s presentation focused on whether a university degree is worth the investment and cost, and how government policy influences higher education.
The Business & Economics Department was delighted to also host Sixth Form students from Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar and Langley Park School for Boys to share the experience.
