Raising resilient girls from Reception through to Year 13 is a central focus at Bromley High School. Every day the pupils have the opportunity to take risks and try new things.

This week, I watched Year 3 splashing in puddles in the pouring rain in our ‘Learning Outdoors Day’ – every girl looked joyous and engaged. Reception’s assembly for Diwali was incredible last Monday; our 4 year-old girls showing immense bravery by standing in front of their school to demonstrate their beautiful diyas and rangolis and being applauded for their presentations.

At the other end of the school our Year 13 students are embarking on their UCAS journey and preparing for their GDST mock interviews, with some pupils sitting Oxbridge exams.  The individual support and guidance we offer our Sixth Formers helps develop healthy self esteem and confidence.

Returning from half term, we were informed of the incredible achievement of Joan in Year 13, who has been crowned England Boxing National Development Champion. Last year, Joan finished second but having trained hard she competed in the semi finals where she outclassed her rival and was placed first. Joan is the highest performing female boxer in her age and weight category and now carries the title of national champion.

Joan’s accolade is incredible, but we all know the endeavour it takes to achieve a goal such as this and the fact that Joan returned to the same competition having come second last year is, for me, the greatest win of all. As Michelle Obama said:

“It is important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.”

I find these words inspirational and they reflect the encouragement that we give to our girls when they bounce back from all types of situations on a daily basis. We ask that they see challenges as an opportunity to grow and to face situations with curiosity, compassion and courage.
