Last week our Lower Sixth Maths pupils attended the annual Maths in Action conference at the Emmanuel Centre, London.

Maths in Action features lively and enriching sessions from mathematicians, engineers, statisticians, architects, code-breakers and data scientists, exploring a variety of topics carefully designed to extend pupils’ knowledge of Maths.

The pupils attended a range of lectures from how to win games mathematically to how to get rich quick. Everyone particularly enjoyed the Magical Maths lecture that explained how some seemingly impressive tricks are actually just memorised equations. A very useful talk offered tips and information on how to excel in Maths A level exams by avoiding common mistakes and learning how an examiner marks.

Throughout the day the pupils were able to ask questions to the speakers and even volunteer to participate. Overall, the group were able to see how relevant Maths is to nearly every aspect of our daily lives and left feeling inspired to continue with their Maths studies in the future.
