On Monday, Bromley High School welcomed The Globe Players for a live performance of An Inspector Calls, one of the key texts studied in the GCSE English Literature curriculum.
The performance was specially staged for Year 9 pupils, offering a valuable opportunity to engage with the play in a dynamic and memorable way. The actors expertly brought J.B. Priestley’s characters to life with energy and emotion. A particularly impressive aspect of the performance was the actors’ ability to multirole, with one performer playing three separate characters. This approach effectively highlighted the distinct traits and behaviours of each character, helping students to engage more deeply with the play. The action was interspersed with insightful commentary on Priestley’s craft – an essential component of literary analysis in the GCSE exams.
Following the performance, students participated in a workshop with the actors, further exploring the concept of ‘a text in performance’ and examining the portrayal of specific characters in greater depth. Volunteers from Year 9 were even given the opportunity to perform key scenes on stage alongside the cast.
“It was very interesting and entertaining, and I liked that it gave me a different perspective on the play. The best thing about it was when the actors included explanations of what they were doing as they acted—it really helped with my analysis of the play.”Paramleen, Year 9 pupil
“The play was very well thought out. It was also really useful to hear the quotations we had been reading and analysing brought to life. The way they explained the play and the workshop afterwards was very helpful.”Evie, Year 9 pupil
Overall, The Globe Players delivered a highly engaging and enjoyable afternoon, bringing to life one of Priestley’s best-known works in a way that deepened students’ understanding and appreciation of the text.
