This month our Junior School football team played in two major competitions, the Under 11 Girls’ Football Festival, held here at Bromley High School, and the Under 11 GDST Football Rally.
Twenty teams joined Bromley High School for our second annual Under 11 Girls’ Football Festival. The event has already proved to be a popular in everyone’s fixture calendar, as it provides players of all ability with a fantastic opportunity to come along, compete and develop all aspects of their game.
The Bromley High School U11 A & B Football Squad were in action and put on a fantastic display of football and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. The A team played out an excellent group stage, separated only on goal difference to finish runners up but progress through to the cup quarter final. Our B team, with many playing in their first football tournament, finished fifth in the group stage with three draws and two losses. The A team drew against Blackheath Prep in the quarter final which led to a closely fought match with both teams having equal chances to score and possession back and forth. Unfortunately, Blackheath Prep were able to break the deadlock, knocking in a goal off the post and took the win 1-0.
Overall, we are extremely proud of how the 21 Bromley High Junior players represented themselves on the day and also by the tenacity they approached each game with. They showed determination and excellent teamwork throughout!
Our footballers also played in the annual GDST Football Rally this half term, with sixteen schools from across the GDST taking part.
The Year 6 team began the day with a solid start in the group stages, taking a 1-0 win vs Putney High and a 4-0 win vs Notting Hill & Ealing High. Going into the final group game, our players had already secured qualification for the cup quarter finals but wanted a good result in their last game to finish top.
The final group game saw Bromley High unbeaten by Wimbledon High, it was a closely fought match throughout, with both teams having equal chances to score. Unfortunately, in the closing moments of the game, Wimbledon took a 1-0 lead.
The Bromley High girls progressed into the quarter finals as groups runners up and were faced with South Hampstead. It was another very even game, with the girls demonstrating excellent defence but unable to convert their chances at goal. The game finished 0-0 and went to penalties. Both goalkeepers did an amazing job at stopping the first two penalties. South Hampstead managed to score their third and took the game with a 1-0 win on penalties.
Despite being out of contention to win the cup, the girls played another two playoff games to round up the day and secure eighth place overall. Well done to each member of the squad: Livia, Lydia, Kitty, Sienna, Alicia, Amee, Sophie, Hanna, Alexa, Abigail, Vicky and Eliza.
“It was a fantastic occasion for the Bromley High team and a great opportunity to learn and compete under pressure. All girls made great progress from one game to the next and have certainly learnt a lot from the experience.” Mrs Oliver, Head of Junior Sport
