Last week, the Latin and Classics classes had the valuable opportunity to attend an online lecture on the Roman poet Catullus, delivered by Oxford University’s Tristan Franklinos.
Dr Franklinos is a prominent classicist at the University of Oxford, serving as a Lector, Supernumerary Fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge, and Lecturer at Oriel College, Oxford.
As the pupils had been studying Catullus’ poetry in class, the talk provided a chance to explore his works in greater depth. Mr Franklinos examined several poems and offered various interpretations, enriching the students’ understanding of the poet’s themes – particularly those of love, which continue to resonate despite the vast cultural differences between ancient Rome and the modern world.
The session included a Q&A, allowing pupils to delve further into Catullus’ life and historical context. The discussion sparked thoughtful conversation and provided fresh insights beyond the classroom curriculum.
“I personally found the talk a great opportunity to build on what we learnt in class, hear fresh perspectives and new ideas!”Evangeline, Year 10 pupil
