The Creative Industries guest lecture series, run by our Art & Photography department, has continued this week with speakers from a variety of professions.
Karen Peacock gave a fascinating insight into starting up a fashion brand, issues around sustainability and the design process. Our pupils enjoyed hearing about how Karen first focused on her niche area of fashion, designing coats, which then developed into running a brand stocked in John Lewis and Next. She encouraged all students to explore what they love doing and make it into a career choice.
“It was so inspiring to hear about the different areas of the fashion industry other than design, such as marketing and how to use social media in a start-up business.”Upper Sixth pupil
Creative Director Ged Qui talked about his varied career in branding and graphic design. The pupils were enthralled to hear about the design process of developing world famous brands such as Bic pens, the Fifa logo and Oxfam logo. Business pupils were particularly interested in how the interplay between word and images builds up a striking brand identity.
Ben Williams also joined us to discuss his 20-year career working in two major international auction houses. His stories on how he regularly sells ceramics for over a million dollars made our pupils all appreciate our kilns at Bromley High! His overview of auction houses and commercial galleries was a valuable insight into the varied and exciting world of international art dealing.
“The vast quantity of roles within the art world, from art lawyers to on-line cataloguing was really inspiring, particularly as I love art but don’t necessarily want to become an artist.”Lower Sixth pupil
