Last weekend, 14 groups of Year 10 pupils completed their bronze Duke of Edinburgh assessed expedition south of East Grinstead.

Having already completed a practice expedition between Limpsfield Chart and Shoreham, each group planned their route through several checkpoints, plotted their maps and completed a detailed route card which explained in more detail the route to be taken in advance of the expedition.

The route consisted of two loops – both over 13 kilometres – which led them near the Weir Wood Reservoir, returning them to the Blackland Farm campsite to stay the night.

After a very hot first day of walking and a few minor navigational hitches, all the groups were eager to pitch their tents and cook their evening meal over a small camping stove. They had fun  roasting marshmallows over the campfire before heading to their tents to get some rest ahead of embarking on the final loop on the second day.

“The Duke of Edinburgh expedition was challenging yet hugely rewarding; for me, I especially enjoyed the teamwork and team camaraderie which drove us all to complete the two-day expedition successfully.” Hannah, Year 10 pupil
