Three Bromley High Sixth Form pupils recently had the opportunity to sing in a performance of Holst’s The Planets at the Royal Albert Hall.
Millie, Francesca and Sanjana performed alongside singers from the City of London Choir in the final movement, Neptune, the Mystic, where an upper-voice chorus sings a wordless, ethereal part that eventually fades into silence. The Sixth Formers had spent the previous weeks working on the intricate and challenging choral parts, before joining the final tutti rehearsal with the rest of the choir and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
In the performance, under the baton of conductor Christopher Warren-Green, the choir were stationed in the gallery of the Albert Hall to enhance the otherworldly effect of the singing. They sang with impressive skill and sensitivity, bringing a haunting finish to one of the great masterpieces of the classical repertoire.
