Year 9 pupils recently enjoyed an inspiring and hands-on workshop with Dr Elena Remme, an archaeologist from King’s College London

Dr Remme introduced pupils to the fascinating world of Roman mosaics, drawing on examples from Pompeii as well as sites across the UK. She explained how ancient craftspeople selected and combined different materials, colours and patterns to create detailed and meaningful designs that have survived for centuries.

After the talk, pupils had the opportunity to put their learning into practice by designing their own mosaics. Carefully considering shapes, colour combinations and repeating patterns, they explored how artistic choices could convey stories and ideas, just as they did in the ancient world.

The workshop provided a brilliant, interactive way to bring learning to life. It also helped pupils understand how Latin and Ancient Cultures connect to modern careers, showing how the study of the past continues to influence contemporary research and professional work today.
