For our Alumna of the Month interview, we spoke to Sarah Christie, Project Manager.
Sarah joined Bromley High School in 2004 and left in 2015, after studying A-level English Literature, Government and Politics and Latin. She read Human, Social and Political Sciences at The University of Cambridge.
Please can you briefly describe your current role?
I am a Project Delivery Fast Streamer on the Civil Service’s graduate scheme, which means I move roles regularly. Currently, I work as a Project Manager for the Department for Transport where I focus on delivering the conversion to digital signalling across the UK’s rail network, in collaboration with our colleagues at Network Rail.
Previously I’ve worked on an IT project in the Home Office, National Park policy in the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and on a critical supply chains project in the Department for International Trade.
How did Bromley High School help shape your future career?
Bromley High gave me the confidence to speak my mind, form positive, lasting relationships and take opportunities when they arose. I was always made to feel I could do anything I wanted to. I feel very fortunate that my time at school was so supportive and gave me the chance to grow into myself and have taken that solid foundation forward with me into university and then my career.
What aspects of Bromley High School did you most enjoy, and find most rewarding?
I most enjoyed all the relationships I formed; with my wonderful friends who I’ve remained close with and my teachers who were visibly passionate about their subjects and genuinely invested in our development.
I also really thrived in Sixth Form where I was able to take on more leadership roles in the school including being a Senior Prefect, getting more involved as an Environmental Rep and co-founding and coaching the Senior Debating Society. It was rewarding to feel like I was giving back to the school community.
What is your favourite memory of being at Bromley High School?
Like a lot of people, I think, probably all the festivities around Christmas; the Christmas Market, the karaoke, the Sixth Form entertainment and delivering the ’12 Days of Christmas’ with more gusto than I’ve ever seen elsewhere! I also have a soft spot for memories of long lunches with my friends outside on the playing fields in summer though.
What value do you get out of your connections with your fellow alumnae?
It’s amazing to feel connected to a wider community of talented, interesting women, who I know I can reach out to if I’m ever in need. In addition, I’ve really enjoyed attending the school’s alumnae events, and reconnecting with old teachers and classmates I see less often.
