For our Alumna of the Month interview, we spoke to Catherine Cornish, Veterinary Surgeon
Catherine joined Bromley High School in 2002 and left in 2014. Catherine went on to study Biological Sciences (Animal behaviour, welfare and ethics) at the Royal Veterinary College followed by a degree in Veterinary Sciences at The University of Bristol.
Please can you briefly describe your current role?
I am a qualified Veterinary Surgeon (MRCVS) working in a small animal practice in Bromley. My role involves performing both surgical procedures and conducting consultations with pet owners. I have a particular interest in imaging, especially ultrasonography, and I also greatly enjoy surgery, with plans to pursue a certificate in this area next year.
How did Bromley High School help shape your career?
Bromley High School, alongside my parents, instilled in me the importance of hard work, making me believe that no career path was ever out of reach. This foundational belief and work ethic were crucial in pursuing a demanding career in veterinary medicine.
What aspects of Bromley High School did you most enjoy, and find most rewarding?
I particularly enjoyed being part of multiple sports teams, especially rounders, and the friendly rivalries with neighboring schools made tournaments both competitive and fun. Another key highlight was participating in the annual dance shows, which were student-choreographed and organised by Ms. Butler.
What is your favourite memory of being at Bromley High School?
A significant memory is from an English lesson where our teacher asked us about our future aspirations. I remember that despite everyone having different goals, there was a shared ambition to excel in our careers and achieve financial independence, a mindset that Bromley High School nurtured.
What value do you get out of your connections with your fellow alumnae?
I maintain close friendships with multiple alumnae from my year group, and we see each other frequently as most of us are in or around London. Bromley High School cultivated these lifelong friendships, for which I am very grateful. Furthermore, I have enjoyed meeting alumni from other GDST schools and sharing our similar schooling experiences. It’s comforting to know that there will always be an alumni network within the GDST for future advice and support, both professionally and personally.
