Last weekend, Year 12 Geography A level students enjoyed a glorious trip to Dorset, with Old Harry Rocks and Lulworth Cove looking their best in the sunshine.

The focus of the trip was on developing essential fieldwork skills and collecting data for their Independent Investigation, a key component of the A level course worth 20% of the final grade.

The students carried out physical geography fieldwork on Swanage Beach, exploring the coastal landscape system and examining how human activity has influenced the stores and flows within this environment. A visit to Boscombe provided an opportunity to investigate social inequalities and consider how different stakeholders can collaborate to achieve regeneration and rebranding.

At Lulworth Cove, the students took part in a more creative approach to fieldwork, focusing on sounds and a “smellscape.” They kept sound journals to capture the human geography of the environment through sensory observation and reflective writing.

Year 12 will now follow a route of enquiry to develop and complete their final Independent Investigation, drawing on the fieldwork experience gained during this enriching and insightful weekend.
