Prospective and current A level English students had the exciting opportunity to listen to Dr Jack McGowan, an academic and performance poet.

Dr McGowan is a performance poet with 10 years of experience on the UK spoken word scene and he writes for both performance and page publication. His writing examines contemporary themes of alienation and fragmentation, unpicks the vicissitudes of 21st-century life, and shines a diminishing light on 90s pop culture.

He spoke to the pupils about his decision to study A level English Literature and to continue this further by studying Creative Writing at the University of Warwick.

He further explained what spoken poetry is and how it can be written, and gave the pupils the chance to write their own spoken poems in groups about a particular persona.

“After this experience I learnt that poetry is very wide spoken and is making its comeback in this generation’s modern way of living.” Prisha, Year 11 pupil
