Last week, Year 8 pupils Kali and Gulsen (pictured above) joined Shreya and Leonie from Year 9, to take part in a virtual debating competition organised by the GDST. Two Year 12 students, Alice and Alexia also acted as judges.

The motions were wide ranging, with debates on whether the feminist movement should oppose the fashion industry, whether parents should be able to remove students from certain classes and whether private companies should be able to use social movements, such as BLM and Me Too, to sell products.

“This was my first time taking part in an external competition, and I felt like it was a really good experience. I am certain that it improved all of our debating skills. I expected topics on economic and coronavirus related issues but was pleasantly surprised with the more unexpected topics.”Shreya Aravinthan, Year 9
