Our Year 7 scientists swapped traditional lab chemicals for colorful confectionery last week in a hands on exploration of particle theory and diffusion.

Armed with plates, warm water, and packets of Skittles, pupils arranged the sweets in precise circles before carefully adding water to the center. Within seconds, the outer shell of sugar and food coloring began to dissolve, sending vivid streams of color spreading inward toward the middle of the plate.

The experiment offered a clear, visual demonstration of key scientific principles:

Concentration Gradient: Pupils observed how coloured dye particles moved naturally from an area of high concentration (around the sweet) to an area of low concentration (the clear water in the center).

Thermal Energy: By comparing results using warm water versus cold water, classes investigated how temperature influences particle movement and speeds up diffusion.

Equilibrium: The experiment vividly demonstrated how particles continue moving until the concentration is evenly distributed across the dish.

The hands on activity turned abstract particle physics into a memorable learning experience, with Year 7 demonstrating excellent experimental technique and keen observational skills throughout the lesson.
