Our Year 12 Spanish pupils enjoyed an inspiring and enriching day in London, combining art, culture and academic research as part of their A Level studies.
The highlight of the trip was a visit to Frida Kahlo: The Making of an Icon at Tate Modern, where pupils had the opportunity to see many of the paintings they have been studying in their Spanish lessons. The exhibition showcases Kahlo’s extraordinary life and artistic legacy, allowing pupils to engage directly with works that have become synonymous with Mexican culture and identity.
Alongside the artwork, pupils explored objects provided valuable insight into Mexican society, politics and culture during her lifetime, helping them to deepen their understanding of the historical and social context behind her work.
Earlier in the day, pupils visited the Instituto Cervantes, the world’s largest organisation dedicated to promoting Spanish language and culture. They took part in a specialist workshop focused on research methods, designed to support their individual investigation projects that will form the basis of their A Level Spanish speaking examinations.
They were able to refine their research skills and explored academic resources within the Biblioteca Cervantes. They accessed articles, journals and digital materials connected to their chosen areas of study, including:
- Controversy in the music and imagery of Rosalía
- Migration pathways within the Spanish-speaking world
- Inequality in the Hispanic fashion industry
- The role of women in South American politics
A memorable and rewarding day that brought together language, culture, history and critical thinking, supporting our pupils as they continue their A Level Spanish journey.
