We are delighted to be launching a new Teacher Spotlight series, celebrating the inspiring staff across Bromley High School and the wider GDST who help shape our students’ experiences both inside and beyond the classroom.

To begin the series, we are pleased to feature Kath Lovett, Head of Art and Photography at Bromley High School, and the GDST Trust Consultant Teacher for Sustainability, supporting and leading environmental initiatives across the Girls’ Day School Trust’s 26 schools.

As Trust Consultant Teacher on Sustainability, Kath has worked on a wide range of initiatives designed to empower students, strengthen collaboration across schools, and embed sustainability into everyday practice. Her work across the Trust focuses on creating opportunities for collaboration, strengthening student voice, and helping sustainability become a meaningful and embedded part of school life. A strong belief underpins her approach: that creativity, education and collective action can drive real change.

Leading Sustainability Across the GDST

A key strand of Kath’s work has been leading the GDST Sustainability Survey, which engaged over 10,200 students across the Trust, the largest girls’ survey of its kind on sustainability attitudes and climate awareness. The insights gathered are now helping to shape Trust-wide priorities and ensure that student voice sits at the heart of decision-making.

She has also worked on the development of the GDST Climate Action Plan, a key requirement for the Department for Education, setting out how all GDST schools are working collectively to reduce environmental impact and respond to the climate crisis in a meaningful and measurable way.

Alongside this, Kath has contributed to a range of Trust-wide initiatives, including:

GDST collective action – termly Trust-wide initiatives enabling all 25 schools to demonstrate shared action on climate change

Global Wisdom Symposium – a flagship GDST event exploring sustainability, equity and global responsibility across the Trust

CareerStart Sustainability Event – an online event introducing students to careers in sustainability and environmental fields

Empowering Student Voice and Leadership

A central focus of Kath’s work is ensuring that students are not only informed about sustainability issues, but actively involved in shaping solutions. In this role, she has supported the establishment of the GDST Sustainability Student Committee, bringing together students from Years 10–13 across all GDST schools.

This initiative reflects a wider commitment across the Trust to student leadership and collective responsibility. The committee provides a platform for students to collaborate across schools, develop campaigns with measurable impact, and strengthen sustainability understanding through peer-led action and engagement.

Collaboration, Creativity and Collective Impact

Kath’s work is strongly rooted in the belief that meaningful change happens through collaboration. Whether through termly GDST collective action initiatives or wider Trust projects, she helps bring schools together to take part in shared environmental action that builds momentum and visibility across the organisation. Events such as the Global Wisdom Symposium and CareerStart Sustainability Event reflect this approach, bringing together students from across the GDST to explore complex global issues, consider their role in shaping the future, and engage with ideas that connect sustainability, justice and opportunity.

A Shared Commitment

At the heart of Kath’s work is a commitment to helping students feel informed, empowered and hopeful about the future. She is passionate about creating opportunities for young people across the GDST to think critically, work collaboratively and take meaningful action towards a more sustainable world, both within their schools and beyond.
