Last Wednesday, a group of Year 12 German A level students had the opportunity to attend a Film Study Day at the BFI Southbank. The day focused on peaceful revolution and the legacy of East Germany.
The British Film Institute, is a leading organisation promoting and preserving film and television culture in the UK. The visit formed part of their A level German studies and aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of historical, social and political themes through film.
Students took part in an in-depth seminar exploring four German films: Ballon, The Lives of Others, Good Bye Lenin! and Jenseits der Blauen Grenze. Each film was analysed in relation to life in the GDR, state control, resistance and the impact of reunification. Students contributed to structured discussions, shared ideas and completed a range of focused activities designed to develop critical thinking and film analysis skills.
The day provided clear and effective preparation for the study of Good Bye Lenin! and enhanced students’ confidence ahead of the examination course.
