Last week, Year 12 and 13 Politics students had the opportunity to engage with our local Member of Parliament, Peter Fortune, in an insightful and engaging session.

Peter Fortune shared his personal journey into politics, offering a first-hand perspective on parliamentary life, the responsibilities of an MP, and the balance between representing a local constituency and adhering to party policies.

A key focus of the session was how young people can become involved in politics, providing valuable guidance and support to those interested in pursuing a political career. His words served as an inspiration to students, reinforcing the importance of political engagement and civic responsibility.

The session included an interactive Q&A segment, where students posed thought-provoking questions, gaining a deeper understanding of parliamentary procedures, elections, the executive, and broader political affairs. This direct dialogue with a political representative enhanced their academic learning, connecting theoretical concepts to real-world political practice.

By attending this session, students developed critical skills such as analytical thinking, effective communication, and political awareness. They gained valuable insights into how politics shapes society and impacts daily life, fostering a greater appreciation for the democratic process. Students left feeling more confident in their knowledge and motivated to explore political opportunities further, whether through further study, activism, or even future political careers.

“This session has greatly enriched our students’ studies, reinforcing their understanding of key political themes and contemporary issues.”Mr Tagg, Head of Politics & Teacher of History

We extend our gratitude to Peter for taking the time to support and inspire the next generation of politically engaged citizens.
