Science was celebrated at Bromley High Senior School during National Science Week. The timetable was adapted to accommodate the lectures and trips that took place.
Dr Clare Elwell from University College London gave a fascinating and inspiring Lecture on Medical Physics to students from Year 10 and Year 11 at Bromley High School and also to guest students from Farrington's School.
Dr Elwell presented her pioneering new method for monitoring oxygen levels in premature babies using infrared spectroscopy which will allow much earlier detection of oxygen deprivation. Dr Elwell gave students an insight into how Physics has varying applications and can take you down many interesting and diverse career paths.
Our AS Level Physics class went to Princess Royal Hospital at Farnborough to look at 'state of the art' medical imaging equipment in the Radiology Department. They were given a very interesting tour by Dr Adrian Thomas who described X-Ray, MRI, CT and Gamma Camera technology and the physics on which these are based. (photo shows girls and their Science teacher sitting next to a CT image of a brain).
Following this, as part of their AS coursework, our young students' brains were exercised by writing a report on some of the physics seen in their visit.
Other trips included a Science Day for Year 7 and Year 8 students run by the West Kent branch of the National Association for Gifted and Talented pupils.
The girls enjoyed brilliant and inspiring demonstrations and activities based on Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Geology.
Also running across the week was a very exciting House Sudoku competition with all girls from Years 7 - 13 taking part.
" The week was a great success and gave unique and varied insights into the world of Science that helps foster a spirit of enquiry and encourages our students to study beyond the syllabus " Lorna Duggleby, Head, Bromley High School.
