Music is about getting excited about sound! John Paynter

There is never a dull moment in the Music department!  With a fully-equipped, purpose-built suite of rooms in both the Junior and Senior schools, music is accessible to all girls.  There is a large stock of classroom and orchestral instruments and electronic keyboards.  The Music Technology room runs Sibelius 4 and Cubase Score VST on ten computers and is used at KS3, GCSE and A level work.

Individual tuition is available on all instruments including piano, strings, woodwind, brass, guitar, percussion, harp and voice.  Over half of the school have lessons from our experienced and highly qualified team of teachers.

Ensembles cater for everyone and give training for beginners to advanced students.  There are regular concerts in school, at local venues and at major London venues.  Tours are organised each year and have included tours to South Africa, Venice, Paris, Bruges, USA, Catalonia, Paris, Normandy, Czech Republic, Slovenia and China.  The Music and Drama departments work closely together for the annual productions.

The curriculum is lively and based around practical experience.  Work in key stage 3 includes Tudor dancing, Firework Raps, Christmas songs, Ragas, pop music, the history of dance music, Story CDs....and more.  There are strong cross-curricular links made. GCSE and A Level Music are offered.

The experience of Music offers wonderful opportunities.  Musicians inherently show other skills including communication, leadership, teamwork, working to a deadline, working under stress, performing and delivering, sustained hard work etc.  The subject will fit with most other subjects as option choices, whether it be other Arts, Humanities, Languages, Science or Mathematics!  Career options are varied - specialised areas include performance, teaching, music therapy, arts management and theatre.
