Applications
If you would like your daughter to be considered for a place at Bromley High School in Year 7 for September 2008 please complete and return the registration form. If you are applying to more than one GDST school then a separate application should be made to each school. All application forms to register girls to take the 11+ Entrance Examination at Bromley High School should be received by Friday, 7 December 2007.
Interviews
We endeavour to offer all girls who register to take the 11+ Entrance Examination and their parents an interview with the Head or member of the Senior Management Team. These interviews last about 20 minutes and take place throughout the Autumn Term. The interview provides an opportunity to answer any questions you may have about Bromley High and to give you further information about the school.
Examination Times and Equipment
The 11+ Entrance Examination will start at 9.15 am promptly on Tuesday, 15 January 2008 and girls will be ready for collection at approximately 1.00 pm . Please arrive between 8.45 and 9.00 am. There is very limited parking on the site and we suggest parking in Oldfield Road when the school site is full. Please park with consideration for our neighbours.
Your daughter may wear either school uniform or not as you prefer and should bring a pen, two lead pencils (HB) and a ruler: calculators will not be needed.
Supplementary Examination
If your daughter is unwell on the day of the examination, please telephone us between 9.00 am and 9.15 am so that we may make alternative arrangements. The Supplementary Examination will be held on Friday, 18 January 2008 at 9.15 am.
The Entrance Examination
The Entrance Examination will consist of papers in Mathematics, English and a General paper.
For the Mathematics paper girls are expected to be working at Level 4/5 of the National Curriculum. Candidates will be tested on a wide range of subjects including basic arithmetic processes, knowledge of the metric system, simple decimals, fractions and percentages, simple probability, numerical sequences and patterns, perimeter and area and spatial work. The use of calculators is not allowed. Some of the questions will be set as problems. Some questions will test potential rather than knowledge already acquired. Sample papers are not available but Key Stage 2 practice books from reputable stationers may be purchased. The test will take 45 minutes.
The English paper will consist of a comprehension where questions are set requiring both specific and general understanding of several linked passages (such as leaflets, articles or stories) and also a composition. For the composition candidates are given a choice of questions. Some will be related to the material studied for comprehension, but others will be descriptive, imaginative or requiring a personal response. The composition will be assessed for accurate spelling, punctuation, grammar and sentence structure and also relevance, clarity of ideas and originality. Sample English papers are not available but Key Stage 2 practice books will indicate the type of approach and questions asked. The test will take 1 hour 10 minutes.
The General paper has some Science based questions, however, the data will be provided so that no previous knowledge is required. The General paper will also contain some choice which will give the candidates an opportunity to express some of their own views and also some non-verbal reasoning. The test will take 45 minutes.
There will be a short break during the morning when light refreshments will be provided. Please let us know of any health concerns including allergies - such as peanut allergy - so that staff are alerted.
Scholarships and Bursaries
All girls sitting the Entrance Examination are automatically entered for the Academic Scholarships . Candidates under consideration for Academic Scholarships are called for a further and rather more formal interview. The value of all scholarships will be made clear in the initial offer letter. Academic and Music Scholarships are awarded without regard to parental income. Means tested Bursaries are also offered and further information is available from the school.
If you wish your daughter to be considered for a Music Scholarship please apply to the Admissions Secretary, Mrs Woodfield for an application form for audition and return the completed form to her by Tuesday, 7 December 2007. Candidates should be of Grade 4/5 standard or above on at least one instrument (including the recorder and orchestral percussion) and should read the instructions carefully which accompany the application form. Each candidate who passes the Entrance Examination will be given an appointment for an audition about 2 weeks after the closing date.
You may bring your own accompanist to the audition if required or, if booked in advance, the Music Department will organise an accompanist for you at a cost of £10 per audition.
Offers
Together with other schools in the South London Independent Girls' Schools' Consortium, we shall send out our offers by first class post on Friday, 22 February 2008. If appropriate, a Reserve List will be held; all girls on such a list are considered to have qualified for entry should a vacancy occur. Information about positions on reserve lists for Bromley High School and other Consortium schools cannot be given. Unfortunately, there may be some girls who do not qualify and who will not, therefore, be offered places at Bromley High School .
Acceptances
Written acceptances must be received by schools in the Consortium for all Scholarships, Bursary and Fee Paying Places by 12 Noon on Wednesday 5th March 2008.
In the unlikely event of no reply being received by the specified date, it will be assumed that you do not wish to accept and the place will be re-offered. Once a decision has been made it must be honoured and thereafter none of the Consortium schools will accept a pupil for whom a place has been confirmed elsewhere within the Consortium.
School Events
11+ applicants and their families are welcome to attend school events. These usually include the Dance Production, School plays and concerts.
Health and Safety
Bromley High School has a strict Health and Safety Policy and candidates will be given appropriate advice to ensure their safety on site.
If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact our Admissions Secretary, Mrs D. Woodfield, on 020 8468 7981. |
